Smartphones do More Damage to Our Body Than we Think

Neck Pain?

Take a moment one day, sit down, and people watch. What’s the one common denominator? Most likely it’s that people have their face buried in their phones. We’re all guilty of it. In fact, I’ve personally had to unfollow, block or mute friends on social media because I found myself wasting time. I noticed it when I got home late one night, sat on my couch and before I knew it, two hours had gone by. Social media started cutting into my sleep time because of the FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) I’d get. Whether it’s social media, games, videos, etc… we’re all guilty of spending too much time on our phones.

Okay, so we know that being on our phone too much can have an effect on our social skills, but can it have other effects?

Yes. And it’s called “text neck.”

According to a recent New York Times article,

“The average human head weighs between 10 and 12 pounds, and when we bend our neck to text or check Facebook, the gravitational pull on our head and the stress on our neck increases to as much as 60 pounds of pressure. That common position, pervasive among everyone from paupers to presidents, leads to incremental loss of the curve of the cervical spine. ‘Text neck’ is becoming a medical issue that countless people suffer from, and the way we hang our heads has other health risks, too.”
