What I Wish I Would’ve Known Before I Got Lip Fillers

So Kylie Jenner did her voodoo on me, and I got lip injections.

It wasn’t that I hated my own lips, I just love the big-lip trend more. And that’s exactly what it is — a trend. So before you run out to let a stranger stick needles in your face, do your research. I love my results, but there are a few things I wish I would’ve known.

Know what kind of filler you want and how much of it before you go in.

There are lots of different types of fillers, including:

  • Restylane, Restylane-L, Restylane Silk
  • Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus
  • Belotero Balance
  • Hylaform
  • Elevess
  • Prevelle Silk
  • Captique

I can’t tell you what kind will be best for you because I’m not a doctor or your momma. But I got a syringe and a half of Juvederm and love the results. Research each brand and be prepared when you go in for your appointment, so there’s no discrepancy between what the doctor thinks you want and what you actually want.

Here’s my before and after (I clearly love Disneyland more than any grown woman probably should):

It is expensive, so don’t do it unless you have a budget for it.

Lip injections can cost anywhere from $500-$1000 per session. I told myself, “I’ll just get it this one time”… but let’s be real. I’m not going back to my pre-fake-lips existence. Most fillers only last about 4-6 months, so if you’re ballin’ on a budget, think twice before going down this rabbit hole.

It does not feel good.

The doctor will prep your lips with a numbing creme, and during most of the procedure, you won’t feel a thing besides a little pressure. However, there were a few times where I could feel the needle, and it wasn’t much worse than a piercing, but it also wasn’t Disneyland.

What I didn’t anticipate was how bad the post-procedure would be. My lips were severely swollen and bruised for about 4 days after, and the pain was awful. The doctor gave me Arnica gel to help with the bruising, but my best advice is to STAY CONSISTENTLY ON IBUPROFEN.

Note: I’m generally a baby when it comes to pain tolerance, so take this with a grain of salt.

Here’s me being dramatic about the pain to my Snapchat friends. I didn’t anticipate I’d be blogging this.

Don’t schedule your appointment right before a big event.

Lesson learned. I was moving to Salt Lake to start my job with U92 just a few days before I got mine done. When I arrived for my first day of work (Summer Jam) my lips were still swollen and I was panicking. I covered most of the bruising with makeup, but you could still tell that I either got lip injections or got punched in the mouth.

I would suggest making your appointment at least 1-2 weeks before a wedding or your birthday party.

This is 3 days post-injection, 1 day before my first day at U92. I was smiling on the outside, but dying on the inside.

Swelling is completely normal and you won’t see your final results for a couple weeks.

I had major anxiety for the first week about this. Don’t. Panic. The swelling will come down, and you’ll start to look less like this in no time:

Be picky.

After the injections, the doctor will move the fillers around with his fingers until he feels your lips are symmetrical. Don’t be afraid to speak up if you think they’re a little off. He’ll appreciate that you spoke up during your appointment rather than calling him in a panic later on.

People will be annoying and ask you if you got lip injections.

My best advice for this is to just own it. Remember when Kylie claimed that she’d never had lip injections? Don’t let that be you. No matter how natural you think your lips look, you look different. And wasn’t that the point anyway? Take it as a compliment.

Some people will genuinely be interested to know, and some people will just want to see you squirm. So don’t squirm.

At the end of the day, I’m happy with my results and will be back for more. No “Ragrets.”
