Gay BYU Graduate Appears on The Ellen Show

Fear of the honor code…

Matthew Easton recently graduated from BYU as Valedictorian and during his commencement speech, Easton bravely came out as a gay man. Ellen reached out and invited him to her show to sit down and talk about what made him decide to make the announcement in front of so many people.

Over the last few months, BYU has been under fire for its very strict honor code.

During the segment, Easton says he feared showing any sign of affection to another man while on campus for fear of what the honor code office would do. He also talked about his white stole of honor that he had on over his graduation gown which he wore to honor a fellow student, Harry Fisher, who was in one of his classes and ended up committing suicide based on the response that he got from the community.
