Last Saturday was my first time at Supercross Live, and I didn’t really know what to expect besides a lot of Fox and Affliction clothing. And I’ll admit, it made a fan out of me. It felt like people involved with the sport are super chill, but the event itself is anything but that.
The thing that makes Supercross so thrilling is that the 20-minute race can completely change in an instant. Like when the current points leader, Jason Anderson, had a technical difficulty and ended up coming in 17th place when he was expected to take 1st — ouch. 1st place was instead clenched by Marvin Musquin, who leads me to my next point.
Supercross is kind of messy. Like drama-queen, gossipy, trash-talking messy. I had the chance to attend the press conference before the event, and when one of the riders, Eli Tomac, was asked about an incident last year involving Musquin (who was sitting right next to him), he sharply said, “No comment”. Everyone in the room got pretty quiet, and I was just in the corner like:
And if you’re not an adrenaline junkie or a drama feen, the pit party is still worth attending. Booths are set up and pretty brand models hand out free stuff. So if “models” or “free stuff” isn’t up your alley.. suit yourself.
So thanks, Supercross, for an awesome weekend, a newfound interest, and all the free Monster Energy drinks I could cram into my backpack. I’ll see you next year.
