Jhene Aiko Launches Writing Campaign for National Day of Writing

“When no one else understands, our journals can understand.”

Jhene Aiko’s sophomore album Trip illustrated her growth not only as a woman, but also as a songwriter. The 22-track album was inspired by her very own journal entries. Well, Aiko wants to let others know how writing has helped her so she’s joined forces with Get Schooled to launch her #PennysPen campaign, which encourage’s young people to express themselves through writing. Get Schooled is a nonprofit organization that aims to improve high school graduation rates as well as promote higher education.

In celebration of National Day on Writing (Oct. 20), Aiko emphasizes the power of the written word. Named after her alter-ego Penny, the #PennysPen campaign will go until next Friday, October 27th. With writing serving as an outlet for Aiko, she hopes her younger audience will gravitate towards the art the same way she has.

The younger generation (ages 13-21) are being asked to share their written work via Instagram or by submitting their clips through Top entries will win a #PennysPen writing kit and all those who complete the “Power of the Pen” badge will be rewarded with a Jhene-inspired sticker.

In a video posted on her Twitter page, the singer/songwriter spoke about the importance of self-expression through writing and how it has personally helped her.

“Writing poetry has always been a form of therapy for me and has helped me get through difficult situations,” Aiko said. “There are days when we struggle and life seems hard, but it always helps when we can express ourselves. And when it seems like no one else understands, our journals can be our best friends…Writing poetry has always been a form of therapy for me. It helps me reflect and get through difficult situations.”
