Lil Wayne Reflects On Signing Drake & His Longevity In The Industry

Lil Wayne recently appeared on the I Am Athlete podcast where he discussed what made him sign Drake and how he has lasted three decades in the music business.

“When Drake’s music was brought to me from the homie Jas, it was about rap. I was like, ‘This dude sounds different,’ said Wayne. “What I loved about him, he was sounding just as dope as we were. When I say we, I’m talking about the streets and what we came from.”  Wayne says he loved Drake’s rapping skills but was shocked upon hearing Drake sing. When it comes to Lil Wayne’s longevity in the music industry he advises, “You can’t be the person that’s saying I don’t like the new music.” He added, “You gotta love it. Learn it, like it, and love it…” Wayne expressed the importance of embracing all music and getting a vocal coach while giving a shout-out to the late, great Mrs. Betty Wright.
