One Rule. Never Make A Sound…
If you haven’t seen “A Quiet Place” yet, what are you waiting for? It got a 95 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and it’s been all over your social media timeline so just go see it already.
The thriller focuses on a couple who fight to keep their children safe from creatures that hunt by sound and slaughter anyone who makes a noise. The film is nearly completely silent, and Bountiful, Utah native Millicent Simmonds, who is deaf in real life, plays a deaf girl in the movie.
Simmonds lost her hearing as an infant after an accidental medication overdose. She learned American Sign Language which you see heavily in the film. Simmonds told KSL, “I really loved the story and thought it was unique…I also really loved the character, Regan. She was brave, tough, a little rebellious, but really just wanted to contribute to the family. She was really complex.”
In an interview with The Salt Lake Tribune Simmonds admits,
“It’s scarier to watch a scary movie than be in one. But maybe I’ll be scared when I watch it.”

Simmonds is now currently working with the United States Agency for International Development on a campaign called Sign on for Literacy that focuses on making sign language accessible to kids all over the world.
