Fact: I’m a bit of a “gear head”, a lover of motor sports if you will.
So much, that every year F1 (Formula 1) comes back to the states I make it out. Lucky for me and any food lover.. AUSTIN has one of the BEST food cultures out there. Unlucky for my belly size.
Now before everyone jumps down my sh*t about what the best BBQ in Texas is, this is not that post. I have so much respect for the art that is BBQ. The majority of people that I know always recommend Salt Lick. I enjoy Salt Lick. But one place that has stolen my heart.. is Rudy’s. To me it’s more than just the best smoke rings or awards. Or what is deemed the right or wrong way. It’s places with character that are memorable to me. A few years ago on my first F1 Austin trip, we stayed about 20 mins from Circuit Of The Americas (the race track). On a whim I Yelp’d nearby spots, and Rudy’s had massively positive reviews. When we rolled up, we thought we were at the wrong spot because it looked like a store inside of a gas station.. because it was. Immediately there were cues of not taking itself so seriously, as you can see from the sign..
On the way to the counter you’re surrounded by bottled soda heaven. I gave in to some diabetic-inducing Orange Fanta, because I’m hood like that. Just kidding. Sorta.
They’ll ask you if it was your first time or return trip. First timers get extra time and attention, as you get to try pretty much every meat option they offer before ordering. Yes please.
My personal go-to’s are the BRISKET MOIST (best item on the menu in my opinion)

Don’t be fooled by the average looking bread, it’s delicious.
But what if you’re out late turning up? Loved this spot so much, I went twice. MICHI RAMEN. Dope atmosphere, super friendly staff. OPEN LATE. Some of the best ramen I’ve had, and I’ve had a lot. If you’re not seasoned in the world of ramen, ask your server what they like. You choose your ramen. Then you pick your broth (light, regular or stout). Then add toppings until you can’t fit into your pants.
My go-to? The Sapporo – which includes chashu slices, bean sprouts, corn w/ butter, woodear mushrooms and green onions. I add Ajitama (marinated soft boiled egg) Kamaboko (fish cake) Spicy Ground Chashu.. then spicy (house made chili oil)
Order sides. Lots of them. Especially these Potato Korokke (deep fried mash potato croquettes) Yup.
So if you happen to be traveling to Austin, give these spots a try. They are definitely #NOMSAYIN APPROVED.
