Post Malone’s ‘Rockstar’ Becomes 2017’s Fifth Rap Hot 100 No. 1

2006, 2004 and 2003 also saw five rap No. 1s in each year.

He may have received some help with a YouTube trick from his label but, congratulations still out to the “Rockstar” Post Malone as he hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated Oct. 28) with his latest single, “Rockstar.” It’s the first No. 1 achievement for Malone and 21 Savage who is featured on the track. As you can see from the clip (above) the song goes in a loop and in the description it has a link to different sites so you can stream the song. YouTube and streams count towards the Hot 100 chart and by doing this trick, they pretty much doubled their streams.

In the 59-year history the Hot 100 chart has had 1,068 No. 1 singles. Malone’s previously best single peaked at No. 8 with “Congratulations,” featuring Quavo, while 21 Savage’s previously best track, “Bank Account,” had hit just outside the top 10 at No. 12. “Rockstar” is the latest sign of rap’s chart revival in 2017. On the May 6-dated Hot 100 chart, rap titles accounted for half of the top 10. That hadn’t happened in four years.

Notably, of the 10 songs to ascend to No. 1 position on the Hot 100 this year, half of them have been rap songs, tying for the most in any year.

Rap Songs to Hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2017
Title, Artist, Weeks at No. 1, Peak Date
“Rockstar,” Post Malone feat. 21 Savage, one week (to date), beginning Oct. 28
“Bodak Yellow (Money Moves),” Cardi B, three weeks, Oct. 7
“I’m the One,” DJ Khaled feat. Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper & Lil Wayne, one week, May 20
“Humble.,” Kendrick Lamar, one week, May 6
“Bad and Boujee,” Migos Featuring Lil Uzi Vert, three weeks, Jan. 21

Comparing this year to 2016, only two of the 10 Hot 100 No. 1’s were rap (Desiigner’s “Panda” and Rae Sremmurd’s “Black Beatles,” featuring Gucci Mane). The only Rap No. 1 in 2015 was Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” featuring Charlie Puth.)

Having five rap hits to top the Hot 100 Chart has only happened 3 other times. We’ve got to go all the way back to the most recent year of 2006. What were those songs?

2006: D4L’s “Laffy Taffy”; Nelly’s “Grillz,” featuring Paul Wall, Ali and Gipp; Sean Paul’s “Temperature”; Chamillionaire’s “Ridin’,” featuring Krayzie Bone; and Ludacris’ “Money Maker,” featuring Pharrell.

2004: OutKast’s “The Way You Move,” featuring Sleepy Brown; Twista’s “Slow Jamz,” featuring Kanye West and Jamie Foxx; Juvenile’s “Slow Motion,” featuring Soulja Slim; Terror Squad’s “Lean Back”; and Snoop Dogg’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” featuring Pharrell.

2003: 50 Cent’s “In Da Club,” Sean Paul’s “Get Busy”; 50 Cent’s “21 Questions,” featuring Nate Dogg; Nelly, P. Diddy and Murphy Lee’s “Shake Ya Tailfeather”; and Lucadris’ “Stand Up,” featuring Shawnna.

With two months to go until the end of the year, it’s very possible for another rap song to reach the Hot 100’s summit and break the record for the most rap No. 1’s in a year.

The dopest part about the five hip-hop artists to top the Hot 100 this year is that all five received the honor for their first time.
