WATCH | Nicki Minaj Debuts “Chun-Li” Selfie Video

“They need rappers like me…”

Last week Nicki Minaj dropped two new tracks, “Barbie Tingz” and “Chun-Li.” This week she’s back with selfie mode visuals for the “Chun-Li” track.

The track is inspired by the Street Fighter character “Chun-Li” herself, but why would Minaj make a track about a video game character?

For those unfamiliar with the Street Fighter series, Chun-Li was the first female fighter added to the game. Since her first appearance in Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, Chun-Li has become one of the most popular characters in the game and has appeared in every subsequent installment.

Now it all makes sense, Minaj dropped this track shortly after Cardi B’s debut album Invasion of Privacy was released. The track also mentions Storm (female) from X-Men who is the second-in-command, and Lara Croft, a strong female protagonist of the classic Tomb Raider game series and films.

Turns out the theme she wanted to get across is that she’s a powerful female hero, but more importantly, she’s still “the queen of rap.”
