McCoy Tyner, legendary jazz pianist who played with John Coltrane has died at the age of 81. The announcement was made on his Facebook page.
A native of Philadelphia, he began studying the piano at the age of 13. By age 21 he was recruited by John Coltrane. Over the course of his career he won 5 Grammy’s and the National Endowment of the Arts’ Jazz Master Award. He also received the Heroes Award from the Philadelphia Chapter of the Recording Academy which also recognized him with the key to the City.
From McCoy Tyner’s obit tonight:
Coltrane once said he “holds down the harmonies, and that allows me to forget them. He’s sort of the one who gives me wings and lets me take off from the ground from time to time.”
