Oh man if there was one memory I wish could just wash away, it would be my first grade Halloween costume. But as a kid, sometimes you don’t have a choice on what to wear. Especially when you were raised in a single parent home.
My mother worked her heart out to help provide for my brothers and I. We never had time to go out and shop for the luxury of a costume back then. But she did what she could, like going to Smith’s at 7 AM on Halloween day to find me a last minute costume. You know by then, it’s just the scraps of left overs on the rack. Well the one she chose and that could fit her budget was a Pac-Man plastic get up. It may have fit her budget, but didn’t quite fit her husky boy. Oh well, luckily I wasn’t one to complain.
While most kids back then arrived in costume, I had to go to the restroom and get in to mine with no parent help. That it self was a pretty hectic experience. Last of all, the costume stayed in tact for about 2 hours of the 7 something hour day. Being an 80’s kid was a struggle back then, but I still loved my childhood… Even with that dreadful costume that looked nothing like Pac-Man himself.
Did you have a bad costume experience growing up?
