Let Love Have The Last Word…
In his very revealing memoir, Let Love Have the Last Word, Common opens up about everything in his life from his childhood, his daughter and more.
Common also opens up for the first time about a painful experience, which he had forgotten about until recently (possible coping experience.)
According to People Magazine, Common was on a movie set going over a scene with actress Laura Dern, when he recalled the haunting memory of him being molested as a kid. From his recollection, the assault happened during a trip to Cleveland when he was around 9 or 10 years old.
In the memoir Common states, “I pushed him away. I don’t remember saying a whole lot besides ‘No, no, no.’ He kept saying ‘It’s okay, It’s okay,’ as he pulled down my shorts and molested me.”
The molester repeatedly asked Common to perform what he did on him to which he refused enough times until the molester finally stopped.
“I felt a deep and sudden shame for what happened.”
I hope being open about my childhood trauma can give others the strength to do the same and help them on their healing journeys. We all have experienced pain and suffering. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.
