On Sunday, a gun was accidentally discharged at an LDS church in Provo.
74-year-old Walter Stewart apparently had the gun in his backpack after forgetting to remove it after target practice the day before. The .22 caliber pistol somehow discharged inside the backpack and shot through wall into a classroom. People were in the room, but nobody was hurt.
Stewart has not been charged.
The LDS church released this statement regarding the incident:
“We remind members and visitors to our chapels of the Church’s policy on firearms: ‘Churches are dedicated for the worship of God and as havens from the cares and concerns of the world.’ The carrying of lethal weapons, concealed or otherwise, within their walls is inappropriate except as required by officers of the law. Local leaders are reinforcing this principle with their members, and we are confident that the building and its members are safe. “
