Back in the golden age of Hip Hop, one rap group had it all. Twin Hype consisted of twin brothers Sly (Glennis Brown) and Slick (Lennis Brown) who were joined by DJ King Shameek (Jose Matos). Though you may not of heard about them, they embodied the “DJ is the back bone” of Hip Hop era.
“Back then, the DJ was everything!”
I remember back in 1989 when YO! MTV Raps had me poppin’ tape after tape in my VCR recording episode after episode. Back then, the DJ was everything! What I mean is nowadays Hip Hop groups with a live scratch artist no longer exists. There was RUN D.M.C. with Jam Master Jay, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, Gangstarr and even Wu-Tang Clan with DJ Mathematics. What I’m trying to say to the kids of today, Hip Hop groups had a DJ that was the real star.
Since the mid 90’s in to the 2000’s, DJ’s have formed their own groups. These pack of DJ’s known as crews were created to help each other make a name for themselves with out the help of the EmCee. Groups like the Beat Junkies, Invisibl Skratch Piklz, The X-Ecutioners to name a few took the DJ and producer world to a whole new level.
Well I got to show love to one of the baddest groups that helped pave the way for DJ’s like myself and the crews mentioned above. This was during an era when rappers would brag about how dope their DJ was. Twin Hype would let it be known that their DJ, King Shameek will take out any Wick-Wack DJs!
