Here we go! I’m personally starting a new series simply titled BARZ WITH DJ EROCKALYPZE.
One of the biggest questions I get as DJ and Program Director of U92 is “where’s the local love?”
It’s here. It’s always been here. There were moments in U92’s past where we got behind local music. Just like any business, ownership and management changes. Sometimes we have the space to do what we want, other times there were different directives and goals. At the end of the day, I can proudly say that the majority of our team one way or another has done our best to support – whether just by attending shows we know locals are opening or being featured. We have DJ’s on staff that have done cuts for local records (shout out to Task & Linus for having me bless “Lonely King“) We’ve done “The Homegrown Podcast” as well as done contests to have locals open at our biggest annual event SUMMER JAM. But let’s stop me now from being too long winded on the subject…
BARZ WITH DJ EROCKALYPZE is a video series where I handpick and feature some of Utah’s own local talent. When I first moved to UT a little over 10 years ago I found out quickly how dope the music scene is here. From verstile DJ’s, talented producers, lyrically driven emcees, fresh dance crews and soulful vocalists – the list goes on and on. The premise is simple. Send us a sample of your work. If we’re impressed, you’ll get an invite to spit IN STUDIO with me. No practice, no pre-prepared sh*t. I’ll talk about it on air. I’ll push for you via my loud speaker that is U92. Hell, we might as well throw a showcase in our venue downstairs with everyone who’s participated. If there’s enough good music out there, what about a local music feature on air? I care. We care. Let’s build.
To kick this series off I hit up CIG BURNA. Reppin’ the west side aka “Westville” I heard his music via U92’s own DJ Briskoner. I also did my homework and casually asked friends and fam who could kick this off proper, he got votes. He had sent me a sample of his current project “Devil’s Food” available on iTunes and was impressed. Gave CIG a surprise call, and in less than 24 hours we filmed the following in one take.
