BACKLASH
J Balvin Says “I am not Afro-Latino” As African Entertainment Awards Rename Category In case you missed it, J. Balvin recently won an award for Afro-Latino Artist of the Year for 2021 at the African Entertainment Awards. Backlash ensued on social media after many people called out the Reggaeton singer and the awards for giving him an award when he clearly doesn’t represent as “Afro-Latino.” J. Balvin responded, reposting a statement from AEA’s president with the caption, “I am not Afro-Latino,” he wrote. “But thank you for giving me a place in the contribution of Afrobeat music and entertainment.” The AEA changed the category of Balvin’s win to “Best Latin Artist Of the year,” and also addressed the negative comments regarding the previous award name saying, “the award was for any artist based in Latin America that is contributing to the African culture especially the Afro-beats sound globally.” Do you agree with the AEA’s response? Who do you think should’ve won in the category?
